Beans are among the most versatile and commonly eaten foods throughout the world, and many varieties. As a Nigerian and according to our culture while growing up my parents always tell me to eat beans a lot. They said it contains a lot of protein and it’ll make me taller. We used to believe that they mostly contain protein (just because beans are commonly used as a protein substitute for vegetarians and vegans).
Yes, they are a source of protein however, you would have to eat a lot of them to meet your daily requirement.
Beans is often classified as a STARCHY VEGETABLE as it contains more carbohydrate than protein with lots of starch and Fibre. The fibre in beans make you feel full for longer. But be mindful, because even though they contain protein, they are still predominantly carb-based .
If it is your primary source of protein, you may want to cut back on other starchy food portions. You can combine it with other types of food that contains a high percentage of protein.
However, beans also has it’s own benefits;
Benefits of eating beans
1: They are low in fat
2: They are high in natural antioxidants
3: People who consume it regularly may be less likely to die of a heart attack or other cardiovascular problem.
4: Some studies have shown it act as antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. These effects could reduce the risk of having cancer.
5: it also helps in controlling appetites, the fiber and healthful starches they contain can help create a feeling of fullness and satisfaction.
7: it may help stabilize blood glucose levels or even prevent diabetes, they are high in fibers, which can help lower blood glucose.
Beans has both carbohydrate and protein but the percentage of carbs is much more than the protein.
