Understanding how you imagine your life in the future can help employers understand whether the trajectory of the role and company fits in with your personal development goals. To answer, provide general ideas about the skills you want to develop, the types of roles you would like to be in and things you would like to have accomplished.

  1. I want you to know that there are no exact or generic answers to most of the interview questions. You need to be creative in your own way to answer most of these questions. When asked this question, you are being asked to say what your plans you have for your future and/or career. They want to know if you are visionary and willing to invest in your future because they need to know if their prospective employee is self-motivated, proactive, and likely to work hard and stick to the job if hired.

In today’s highly competitive market, HRs are looking for the slightest opportunity to use as an excuse not to hire. So, you could be on the axe-head spot if you are not fully prepared to tackle this question.

    What should you say?

    1. Keep your answer generic. As general as you would answer this, ensure to keep your answer truthful, but broad enough so it does not raise doubts whether you would be a good fit for the position you are applying for.
    2. Stress your interest in a long-term career at the company. Your interviewer wants to know if you would settle real quick in the company and grow with the company as time flies. Anything could go wrong in the firm’s operational activities, however, the company would still invest time and resources in training whoever they hire next.
    3. Demonstrate your enthusiasm for the job as a ‘thrilling next step’ for you. Make it clear as crystal that you are highly motivated to take up the opportunity immediately.

    Examples are given below

“My goal right now is to find a position at a company where I can grow and take on new challenges over time. Ultimately, I’d like to assume more management responsibilities and get involved in product strategy. But most importantly, I want to work for an organization where I can build a career.”

“I am driven to be the best at what I do and I want to work somewhere where I’ll have opportunities to develop my skills, take on interesting projects, and work with people I can really learn from. Some of the most innovative thinkers in the industry work here and that’s a big reason why I would love to build a career here.”
